This mod completely overhauls most of game’s systems, especially the combat, leveling and alchemy.
Stat Interplay
There are lots of new stats like attack and dodging speed, poise, adrenaline (not the same as before), vigor, etc. These are all interconnected and have effects on regeneration rates, values and many other things. They also actively affect the gameplay, like having less health and stamina will make you attack and regenerate slower unless using certain potions. You can check the stats themselves and what they are influenced by in the character info sheet in your inventory.
Sword Mechanics
A silver sword is not needed for every monster anymore. Most monsters will require a steel sword to be dealt with (although silver works too), while Cursed creatures, Vampires and Specters will only take damage from silver blades.
Vigor
Vigor is what was previously named Adrenaline. It is now a regenerative stat which gets drained when taking damage. It's used to cast signs and can be inceased by drinking certain potions. It does not regenerate while Quen is active. The lower the amount of available vigor, the lower the sign intensity stat is.
Talents
Talents have been majorly overhauled and rebalanced. Most combat talents were changed, along with half of alchemy ones and a couple of the sign ones. They are active as soon as unlocked and they only need to be equipped to synergize with mutagens. You can preview the later talent levels by highlighting it and using the contextual buttons displayed on the bottom of the screen.
Signs
Signs have been majorly overhauled. Aard can be upgraded into a great damage dealing tool, while the alternate is for crowd control.Igni is great at crowd control and its alternate version is a good damage dealing tool.
Yrden is a much better balanced defensive and offensive tool if upgraded and helps keep you from taking damage.
Quen is more sensical in its way of protection, shield health is based on sign intensity and currently available health and can protect from multiple incoming weak hits. The alternate version can block an infinite amount of damage, but if broken Geralt is knocked back with a huge Vigor regen delay. Vigor does not regenerate while it is active, so it's to be used wisely. While powerful, it can actually cause you harm.
Axii is actually useful in combat, unlike before. Upgrading it makes it into a spectacular crowd control tool, especially against human opponents.
Poise
Poise is the stat which dictates resistance to stagger. Both the player and enemies have it. It is calculated based on armor worn, available health, red mutagens, toxicity, etc. Higher poise means a higher chance to resist stagger from an incoming light attack (and possibly heavy attacks too, later on).
Speed
Several new speed stats are present in the mod, such as light attack, heavy attack and dodging speed, which are all influenced by currently available health, stamina, armor worn, etc. Wearing heavy armor slows you down (attacks are only affected by chest armor and gauntlets), while wearing light or no armor will increase overall speed.
Dodging
Dodging no longer makes you completely impervious to attacks. If you get hit while dodging you will take grazing damage. If you are not dodging away from the opponent, you will take full damage instead. To dodge effectively actual spacing is required, while Fleet Footed greatly improves dodging capability overall in the form of stagger negation, speed, angle increase for the grazing damage and others.
Equipment
The way equipment works has been completely changed. Light, medium and heavy armors all offer different base levels of protection, making each very similar to ones of their own category. There is variance in their category based on the quality of the gear (common, rare, etc) and their secondary stats.Every piece of equipment is usable and upgradable in their own way, it is a matter of preference and which bonuses work better for you, not levels.
Six new sets of unique, specialized witcher-style plate armors are available to be obtained from the grandmaster armorer in Toussaint.
Durability
Armor durability has also been changed and now depends on the type of armor. Heavy armor is more durable while light armor gets damaged more easily. Sword durability has been changed to reflect their damage mechanics, making silver weapons much more brittle, as silver is a weak metal and steel weapons more durable. Overall, durability has a much higher effect on the efficiency of your equipment. Keep your equipment in good shape if you don't want it to fail you in combat.
Friendly HUD
Friendly HUD is now included in its whole splendor, along with some minor changes I made to ensure compatibility and remove options that were not working anymore. Make sure to click the link to read all the included features and options, and consider donating to her/endorsing her work if you have not done so yet!
Gameplay and Exploration
Probably the biggest change in the mod, the way these work has been changed completely too. There are absolutely no things in the game that are leveled anymore. Not the equipment, not the quests, not the enemies and not even Geralt. You can explore anywhere and take on anything at the beginning of the game with the potential to be successful in your endeavors instead of being completely barred from content.
Geralt's progression happens organically through gameplay by using his innate abilities, like performing fast and heavy attacks, blocking, countering, creating alchemical items, casting signs, etc. These all increase the skill progression of their respective paths, granting you talent points for use ONLY in that path. If you brew many potions, you will be good at brewing potions. Makes sense.
Improved Loot and Shop Inventories
Shop inventories have been updated to include empty bottles for alchemy and loot tables have been redone in a more immersive manner as to not offer incredibly valuable loot when no work was put in. Valuable loot will only be found in guarded areas or treasure hunts quests. No more random invaluable relic drops!
Meditation
There is a new meditation system in place, completely removing the vanilla one. Meditation allows for the passing of time, resting and gaining of bonuses and the creation of alchemical items. If you have enough firewood available, Geralt will create a fire which allows for the creation of all manner of alchemical items such as potions, decoctions, bombs, etc. Resting for at least 6-7 hours near fires also grants you a well-rested bonus, increasing maximum vitality.
Alchemy
Alchemy is also.. you guessed it, completely changed. Alchemical ingredients now have base components, namely Vitriol, Rebis, Aether, Quebrith, Hydragenum and Vermilion. Different quantities of these components are present in herbs and monster parts and are required to create potions.
Potions, oils and bombs are all created individually and you can make as many of them as you'd like.Ingredients can be intuitively changed in the alchemy menu by selecting the ingredient you want changed and using directional keys or the scroll wheel (if using the mouse) to cycle through them. Only available ones are displayed (unless you are at an alchemist, where you can buy any of them from the alchemy menu) and you are told what the missing ingredients are.
Matching up the Albedo, Rubedo and Nigredo secondary components also allows for the creation of potions with different secondary effects:
Albedo - Lowers the toxicity of subsequently consumed potions.
Rubedo - Increases vitality regeneration.
Nigredo - Increases overall damage dealt.
Alchemical items are created by opening the alchemy panel while meditating near a fire and then brewing the indended potion or making the intended bomb with the ingredients you'd like. After the menu is closed, the brewing process will commence and at the end of it, the created items will be added to the inventory. The time it takes to create items is based on the number of ingredients an item has, while the time it takes per ingredient can be changed in the menu.
Inventory
Geralt's carrying capacity is lowered by a lot, but in turn you can store items in your horse's inventory and carry more overall than one could in vanilla. There are several quality of life improvements to horse inventory management such as transferring all miscellaneous items, like crafting components into it with a single button press and also inventory sorting. If you have weapons and armors selected, the stash will only show weapons and armors too.Crafting ingredients, money, etc are all automatically used when setting a fire, crafting, doing alchemy, buying items, etc as long as the horse is near.If the horse is near when you are at a shop or a craftsman, you can switch between Geralt's inventory and the horse's inventory to directly buy and sell things into and from it, directly dismantle items from it and repair items in it.
Toxicity
Toxicity has been changed to be a way more active part of gameplay and to make you think twice on what you drink. The toxicity of potions will remain latent for most of their duration, very slowly waning away. When the potions' effects are starting to wear off, so will the toxicity start to fade faster and faster until it clears from your system.Toxicity is now something to be very mindful of, as the threshold at which you start overdosing is 50 an it CAN NOT be increased. Drinking too many potions will end up killing you, while the amount of toxicity in your system also makes you feel more numb, increasing poise, but also impedes your health and stamina regeneration among other things.
Enemy Overhaul
Enemy combat styles have been majorly changed. Humans can actually fight now and will try to kill you instead of acting like idiots. They have new arrays of moves depending on what weapons they use and their AI parameters have been also changed to reflect their skill levels.Skilled swordsmen will prove to be a real challenge, especially in groups, while heavy weapon enemies will hit really hard and actually try to catch up to you instead of just slowly walking towards you, being useless.
Enemies now also have an armor system, not just the player, and armor piercing talents and runes are needed to deal with tougher enemies or ones in full plate armor.
There is also an enemy disparity system in place: Different opponents have a chance to be smaller/bigger which influences their affinity to be faster/slower and stronger/weaker. Different enemies within the same species will not be the exact same anymore.
Injuries
Each melee attack has a chance to inflict several different injuries, all with their own adverse effects. There are two groups of injuries, frontal and dorsal ones, depending on where the injured character was hit when receiving one.Arm and leg injuries have a chance to make one stagger when attacking, head injuries cause severe damage and incapacitate one for some time, chest and spine injuries cause trauma and heavy bleeding. These are active for both the player and for enemies. Injuries are automatically healed once health is restored to full.
Special Attacks
Performing a fast attack while holding block will make Geralt do a hilt bash which can stun or even knock down enemies (if they have low enough health and you chain-stun them), while also draining their stamina. Only works on small enemies. Performing a heavy attack while holding block will make Geralt do a heavy double strike attack which can stagger enemies and has a 100% chance to apply an injury. If the second swing brings them down to below 40% hp and they are staggered at the time, a finisher is automatically performed.
Animations
Geralt has received a new array of combat moves (ones that look more sensical than spinning in place, can be disabled, though) along with animations for eating, drinking and picking herbs (can also be disabled, though).
Runewords
Runewords have all been changed, now there are only 3 runewords, in essence. Each one has 3 levels, making it 9 runewords you can apply. They are tiered now, the level 2 runeword requiring the level 1 first, along with the craftsman upgrade.
Finishers
You are no longer invulnerable while performing them, but in turn you can choose the direction of finishers. Holding forward will attack forward during the finisher, holding left will make Geralt move right and attack towards the left side. This can be used to fend off enemies quite easily while performing finishers.
Night Sight
It is now a base ability of Geralt's to be able to see in the dark, which can be activated at will.
SKILL PATH LEVELING:
Fast Attack: Performing fast attacks on enemies grants full XP. Simply swinging increases XP outside of combat at a much slower rate.
Heavy Attack: Performing heavy attacks on enemies grants full XP. Simply swinging increases XP outside of combat at a much slower rate.
Defense: Parrying, countering and dodging attacks grants XP.
Crossbow: Shooting enemies grants XP.
Battle Trance: Being in combat grants XP. XP is awarded at the end of combat if at least one enemy was killed. Not taking any damage grants more XP.
Signs: Casting signs grants XP as expected.
Brewing: Brewing potions grants XP per potion made.
Oil Preparation: Brewing oils grants XP per oil made.
Bomb Creation: Creating bombs grants XP per bomb made.
Mutation: Distilling items and creating decoctions grants XP.
Trial of the Grasses: Consuming potions and decoctions grants XP. Decoctions are more toxic, therefore more XP is gained.
To install:
Download the file, open it and extract its contents into your main Witcher 3 folder (where the DLC folder is).
Open up the keybinds.txt file, select everything and copy it to the top of the input.settings file in DocumentsThe Witcher 3.
After that, open up the keybindsxml.txt file and copy everything from there into the input.xml file in 'binconfigr4gameuser_config_matrixpc'. You should add the contents directly above <!-- [BASE_CharacterMovement] -->.
If you are updating, DO NOT add the keybinds multiple times. Always delete the old keybinds you have added and add the new ones again. If you have duplicates, some things might not work as expected.
IMPORTANT: After the mod compiles and the game starts after installation or updating, exit the game and restart it to keep bugs from happening. It seems like there might be possible problems with the game, causing weird behaviour for unknown reasons.

Some monsters can poison or weaken Geralt in many ways - try to avoid most of their attacks
Combat system in Witcher 3 is quite expanded, but its basics are similar to previous installments of the series. What's important, during the prologue in Kaer Morhen you can learn all the basics, so you should agree on participating in the full training. Below you will find a reminder of most important things that you should remember before each battle and explanation of some more complicated aspects that aren't described well enough at the beginning of the game:
- Start each battle with selecting the right type of sword. Steel sword is used for killing humans and animals, silver for eliminating monsters. If you have trouble with recognizing enemy type, look at his health bar - it will be red (steel sword) or silver.
- Dodges are mandatory in almost every battle. In most cases, a standard, quick dodge will be enough. It will allow you to easily avoid enemy attack and hit him from the sides. Only in more serious situations (like when a powerful enemy is charging at you) perform a dodge connected with a roll.
- Parrying is a good combat technique but only if you fight enemy that is on your level or weaker than you. Trying to break an attack of stronger enemy might end in failure and short stun of Geralt.
- The choice between fast and strong attack should at the beginning depend on what type of enemy you are fighting. For example, you should use fast attacks against more agile ghouls and strong attacks against slower bears. Later in the game the choice should depend mostly (or even only) on how you developed your character. For example, if you mostly developed your fast attacks and light armor, then use fast attacks against slower enemies as well.
- Witcher signs should be a mandatory part of each battle. Most of all, use the signs that your enemy isn't resistant to (more information about preparations can be found on further pages of this chapter). In case of the weakest enemies (like bandits) you have more freedom of tactics. However, I recommend Igni sign which deals additional area damage, can burn enemies for few seconds and might lead to additional explosions.
- In addition to swords for melee combat, use some ranged weapons as well. The crossbow is sadly a weak tool, although you can upgrade it later in the game and obtain some rare bolts. This weapon is useful for luring flying enemies to the ground and for killing enemies under water. Bombs are much more useful, you should always have some of them. Try to precisely aim where you throw the bomb, most of them have small area of effect and it is easy to waste a charge.
- Try to regularly drink general potions that increase Geralt's combat abilities. By general potions I mean ones that can be used no matter what sort of enemy you fight. One of such example potions is Thunderbolt which increases strength of all attacks for limited time.
- Some enemies have unique attacks that can be very harmful to you. For example, some attacks can stun you for few seconds, poison you or make you bleed. When fighting enemies that are capable of doing so, you must focus even more on dodging, thanks to that you won't have to spend much time on keeping your character alive instead of planning new attacks.
The Witcher 3 recently picked up its very own set of official modding tools, meaning community members can now craft their own silly horses and share them with each other. But the modding community for The Witcher 3 is already in swing, having been making creations since the day the game launched.
If you’re excited by the prospect of bringing a few minor/major changes to Geralt’s world, then our list of the best Witcher 3 mods is exactly what you need.
How do I install Witcher 3 mods?
Modding The Witcher 3 can be a little fiddly, so its imperative that you follow the install instructions that come with each mod. Where you need to put files can change from mod to mod, so read the instructions carefully. Generally though, you’ll need to unpack the mod’s files into the Mod folder in your Witcher 3 directory. If you have the game on Steam, this is likely to be found at:
C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsCommonThe Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
or something similar. If you bought the game from Good Old Games, search for ‘GOG Games’ on your hard drive to find the directory.
You may find it handy to use a mod manager to help you install/uninstall mods and keep folders tidy. You can find our recommended manager in the Essential Mods section.
Essential Witcher 3 mods
Official ModKit Samples
With the launch of the ModKit, CD Projekt RED created four sample mods to show the community what can be done with the tools. These are they: a new set of textures for Geralt’s starting armour, a ‘fabulous’ new unicorn skin for your trusty steed Roach, Custom Equipment Sets, and ‘Petard sWitcher’, which is an introduction to scripting changes for budding modders.
Debug Console
Many of the mods available for The Witcher 3 require you to make use of the debug console in the game. Make sure you have this installed to allow access to it.

Witcher Mod Manager
Because The Witcher 3 is still young, the Mod Manager is very much a work in progress. It’s usable though, and is frequently updated, making it a useful tool for those planning to have a lot of mods working together.
Hunter’s Config
There’s loads of invisible settings under the hood of The Witcher 3, and Hunter’s Config is the tool for tweaking them. It’s an interface that gives you access to all of the .ini files, and also has a section for SweetFX graphic changes. Really useful for tuning the game to your exact ideal settings.
The Witcher 3 graphics mods
E3FX
One of the things we’re getting used to in games is things not looking like they did at E3. It doesn’t have to be this way though. CD Projekt may not have shipped The Witcher 3 looking like the E3 demo, but modders have made sure to transform it into that level of quality with this graphics mod.
Cutscene Lighting mod
The Witcher 3 uses a different set of lighting definitions during its cutscenes than it does in playable sections. If you’d rather the lighting was cutscene-pretty at all times, this is the mod for you.
UBER Fidelity Suite
A collection of reshaders to alter the look and feel of The Witcher 3 without destroying the art style, UBER has ‘cinematic’ and ‘realistic’ pre-sets to choose from. Enhancing colours, intensifying effects, and adjusting the lighting, these changes make subtle but powerful changes to the game’s atmosphere.
PhotoMode
The Witcher 3 is easily one of the most astonishing-looking games on PC, and every few minutes there will be a gorgeous vista or incredible detail that you’ll want to keep a snapshot of. PhotoMode allows you to instantly pause the game and remove the HUD, allowing you a perfect view to screenshot and keep.
The Witcher 3 gameplay mods
Infection Mode
Zombies are everywhere, including The Witcher 3 thanks to this mod. Starting Infection Mode summons a ‘patient zero’ devourer in the area, which will proceed to wreak havoc by biting NPCs. Victims will transform into necrophages, and then proceed to hunt down everything, including you. The longer the infection goes on, the more NPCs that get bitten. You can define the amount of ‘zombies’ that can be created, but feel free to set that number large if you think you’ve got what it takes to survive the apocalypse.
Gwent Redone
Witcher 3 Finisher Mod 1
Gwent is perhaps The Witcher 3’s big secret weapon, and you’ve no doubt already played it to death. Reinvigorate the card game with re-balanced stats and brand new artwork, and dive back in for a fresh take.
Indestructible Items
If you’re just trying to power through the story of The Witcher 3, realistic RPG elements like weapon degradation are only going to slow you down. This modremoves the inconvenience of having to repair weapons and armour, keeping them shiny and sharp for life.
Immersive HUD
The Witcher 3 is really beautiful, and having a set of maps and text persistently hovering over the world destroys the illusion a little. This work-in-progress mod makes the HUD disappear, and only display when needed. To see the map, just activate your Witcher sense.
Fast Travel from Anywhere
Some games refuse to do fast travel if it’s not logical. You have to go to a boat dock, or a bus station. The Witcher 3 sort of does this, but it’s still not logical. You can fast travel, but only from signposts. If you’d rather just give up on this nonsense, this mod lets you fast travel from anywhere you damn please.
Weight Limit mod
RPGs are all about picking things up. Why on earth would you leave that sword on that corpse? It’s worth a gold coin, surely? Make sure you never have to leave a single shoe behind on your travels with this Weight Limit mod, which scraps any restrictions on what you can carry.
Increased Creature Loot
Sometimes you can go to town on a group of creatures and discover they drop absolutely nothing. Make sure disappointment isn’t in your future by installing this mod, which makes sure every animal and monster drops at least something. You can also set the mod to increase the frequency of rarer drops.
Witcher 3 Finisher Mod 1
Auto Loot
If you’ve got the Weight Limit mod installed, then there’s no stopping you from carrying the loot of every corpse in the entire kingdom. Auto Loot doesn’t ask you what you want to take or leave behind; just tap E and Geralt will hoover it all up.
Wealthy Vendors
Now you’ve got all that loot, no doubt 9/10ths of it is useless. It’s time to sell up. Unfortunately The Witcher 3’s vendors tend to be absurdly poor and unable to afford your entire stash. Wealthy Vendors makes sure they have plenty of money to pay you with, and you’ll be given a fairer price for your wares too. No rip-off merchants here.
Better Combat Enhanced
Better Combat adjusts battle to be far more strategic, relying less on repeated tactics and more on reading the situation from moment to moment. It also puts far more emphasis on blending swordplay with magic signs; combat is almost impossible without applying some kind of magic effects to enemies.
Ultra Gore
Geralt’s a monster hunter, and you don’t kill monsters by being all softly-softly with a blade. Ultra Gore makes more of Geralt’s kills wince-inducing, blood-splattering affairs by significantly upping the chance of dismemberment. So if you’re a fan of the way you can occasionally split a man in two from crotch to neck, then this is the mod for you.
Trophies Redone
If you chop off a particularly nasty monster’s head you can keep it as a trophy. These hunks of rotting flesh bestow Geralt with a variety of buffs, but the boosts available in the standard game are a little on the dull side. This modchanges the perks offered by trophies, making them significantly more useful.

Witcher Sense Quest Objectives
To keep the game as immersive as possible, you may want to remove the markers on the map that blatantly point out where to go in order to find your next quest objective. This mod does exactly that, and willonly offer pointers for quests when using Geralt’s Witcher senses.
Spawn Companion
The Witcher insists that Geralt is a man of solitude, yet it’s obvious through the story that he’s a man desperate for true companionship. Since he lives in a computer game and not the labyrinth of suffering we know as real life, you can use a mod to magic up a friend in an instant. Spawn Companion allows you to bring any NPC you fancy along for the journey.
FOV Fix
The camera in The Witcher 3 adopts a sort-of over-the-shoulder position, which may not be to everyone’s tastes. If you find this closer view a bit restrictive, use this FOV fix to open up the angle of viewing on the world and see much more of Geralt’s surroundings.
Extreme Weather Conditions
The Witcher 3 kicks up a wonderfully good thunderstorm, but what if they were even more thundery? Extreme Weather adds far more sheet and forked lightning to skies, ominous cloud formations, and hurricane-grade winds to all regions for some truly spectacular storms.
More Horses
You’ll spend a lot of time on horseback in The Witcher 3, so it makes sense to ride a breed that’s just to your taste. This mod adds a couple of extra horse skins to the game, so you can colour coordinate Roach with your armour sets.
